Mosaic Wine Bottle Craft

I’ve acquired a taste for wine. With that comes empty wine bottles, which is usually followed by wine bottle crafts, right? That would be the logical order of things. But really what comes first is the quandary… do I save them for months (who am I kidding, more realistically it’s years) and make something, or just toss them into the recycle bin? Of course I save them and so my craft room shelves are loaded with empty wine bottles just waiting to be transformed into something new and shiny.

Enter pretty enamel paint and scrapbook paper. Surely you know where this is going, yes? Americana makes a line of enamel paints called Crystal Enamels. They are sheer, but full of color. So pretty! Do you remember these Crystal Enamel Drinking Glasses I made a few years ago? They were very popular, too bad they all ended up broken. *sigh* But I digress… back to the project.

This particular bottle looks really beautiful in a window because the light shines through the color. I really do love the look! The mosaic part? Just scrapbook paper my friends. :)

Oh, and someone will probably ask, so I’ll go ahead and cover it now.. these enamel paints are made to be washed and dishwasher safe, BUT because I’ve used paper and Mod Podge too I would not recommend submerging this bottle in water. You can wipe it clean with a damp cloth, that should be just fine.

For this project you will need the following supplies:

Empty wine bottle, labels removed, washed and dried
Scrapbook paper in two different patterns
Americana Crystal Gloss Enamel paint (Pink)
Gloss Mod Podge

I bought both of these scrapbook papers in individual sheets at Michaels. The flower pattern is called Watercolor Blue Ditsy.

..and the polka dot design is called Aqua Dot. Both papers are made by Recollections.

Choose a color paint that coordinates with your scrapbook paper. I chose Crystal Gloss Enamels in Pink.

Paint the bottle with one even coat of Crystal Gloss Enamel paint. Set aside to dry. It will look cloudy when it’s wet…

…but clears up as it dries.

Cut scrapbook paper into 1-inch squares. To make the paper easier to apply, dip it into water and place on a paper towel. Moistening the paper will soften it up, allowing it to “grab” the curve of the bottle.

Apply Mod Podge to a small section of the bottle. Paint a small amount of Mod Podge to the back of a scrapbook square and press onto the bottle. Repeat all over the bottle, varying the different patterned papers randomly.

When all papers have been applied to the bottle, use Mod Podge to give the entire thing a generous (but not dripping) top coat.

Allow bottle to dry completely.
