Kids will love these skyscraper pillows. I am a big believer in letting kids have a say in how to decorate their rooms…to a point, of course. My one rule with my kids, Oliver, age 6 and Sommer, age 4, is this: no licensed characters on sheets, on the wall, on the rug. Period. I’m cool with My Little Pony t-shirts and Transformer toys, but it’s a big no-no when it comes to decorating. Their minds and obsessions change so frequently and no one wants to spend money on a comforter every time a new animated movie comes out!

These Skyscraper Pillows from my recent book, Project Kid: Crafts that Go! can satisfy everyone from superhero lovers to Cars-obsessed kids to master Lego city builders. Not only do they give a crisp, modern, and playful look to a bed, but they can also be tossed on the floor and become the buildings that Spiderman scales, or the city that Lighting McQueen races through. It’s really a win/win for everyone! And bonus: you get to show your kids that you can make simple things together that you can love and play with!
Check out both of my Project Kid books for hundreds of ways to create stylish, keepsake crafts with your kids that they can wear, play with, and proudly display!
What you’ll need
- Throw pillow
- Scrap paper
- Scissors
- Black and yellow felt
- Fabric glue
- Begin by making a rough layout of your window grid on the pillow using rectangles of scrap paper. You can let your little architect figure out how big he wants his windows to be; the green pillow shown here (from Pier1.com) fit thirty windows that were 2½ inches tall by 1½ inches wide.
- Once you have a design you’re happy with, cut rectangles from black and yellow felt. Cut one yellow rectangle for approximately every five black.
- Lay out your window pattern on the pillow, interspersing yellow windows as you go. Glue the felt windows to the pillow, making sure you apply the glue to the outermost edges of each rectangle. Let dry for at least an hour before reclining.
