George and Harold are at it again in the newest installment of the children’s book series favorite, Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-a-Lot! Anyone who has school aged kids has heard of this amazing series as it’s an all time favorite among that set. And with kids just getting back to school, the timing couldn’t be better.

Now, if you haven’t heard of Captain Underpants, it’s high time you found out. This book series has sold an astonishing 70 million books worldwide, over 50 million of those sales coming from the United States. The main characters are two fourth graders, George Beard and Harold Hutchins. Captain Underpants is a superhero character from one of the boys’ homemade comic books. One day the character accidentally becomes real when George and Harold hypnotize their principal, Mr. Krupp. When my boys were younger, these books always made them laugh!
School aged boys and girls alike have loved the pages of Captain Underpants over the years, my kids included. Because of the hypnosis, the alter ego of school principal Mr. Krupp, becomes “Captain Underpants” when he hears the sound of fingers snapping, yet he turns back into Mr. Krupp when he is soaked with water. The new book, Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-a-Lot, was released on August 25, 2015.
There have been numerous villains over the years and Captain Underpants’ powers have changed too. What hasn’t changed is the love for reading that this series has developed among children everywhere. Even kids that don’t like to read find the silly stories and bathroom humor too hard to resist.
Reading Gives you superpowers!
Dav Pilkey, the author of Captain Underpants, has released a new video on why it’s so important that kids read for FUN. Making their own book choices and reading them helps develop their vocabulary and cement their love of reading. Please take two minutes to click and watch the video below for a very important message I know you will love as much as I did!
Because reading gives you superpowers, I want to show you and your kids how you can make a fun Captain Underpants bookmark to help keep track of where they are in their reading adventures.
You will need the following supplies:
- Jumbo craft stick
- Red felt
- Fine point black marker
- Peach paint
- Craft glue
- Scissors
- Captain Underpants pattern
Paint the front and back of the craft stick with peach paint and let dry. Meanwhile, print off the patterns.
Using the pattern, cut the cape from red felt. You can use pinking shears to cut the zig-zag pattern across the bottom of the cape or simply use a diagonal back and forth motion with regular scissors. Also, cut a strip of red felt (1.25” x 0.25”).
Glue the craft stick to the center of the cape and glue the red felt strip across the front of the craft stick for the cape’s tie strap.
Use black marker to color in the lower half of the mouth below the teeth.
Cut out the mouth and the underpants.
Glue both the underpants and the mouth to the craft stick. Use a marker to draw eyes, nose and chest.
Make sure your bookmark has had a chance to dry before using it regularly to read, read, read!
About the Book
There’s something rotten in the state of Ohio, and it’s smellier than a pile of putrid gym socks! Steer clear–it’s Sir Stinks-A-Lot!
George, Harold, and their doubles, Yesterday George and Yesterday Harold, have a good thing going. Two of them go to school, while the other two hide in the tree house and play video games all day–then they switch! But when their malicious gym teacher, Mr. Meaner, creates a method of mind control that turns their fellow students into attentive, obedient, perfect children, the future of all humanity will be in their hands!
About the Captain Underpants series
Best friends George Beard and Harold Hutchins are the unofficial class clowns of fourth grade. There’s nothing they love more than making comic books about a silly superhero named Captain Underpants. But now they’ve accidentally transformed their mean school principal, Mr. Krupp, into Captain Underpants himself! Join George, Harold, and the Waistband Warrior as they fight for Truth, Justice, and all that is Pre-Shrunk and Cottony – and save the world, too!
About the Author
When Dav Pilkey was a kid, he suffered from ADHD, dyslexia, and behavioral problems. Dav was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit out in the hall every day. Luckily, Dav loved to draw and make up stories, so he spent his time in the hallway creating his own original comic books.
In the second grade, Dav Pilkey created a comic book about a superhero named Captain Underpants. His teacher ripped it up and told him he couldn’t spend the rest of his life making silly books.
Fortunately, Dav was not a very good listener.
Dav continues to create books in the Pacific Northwest where he lives with his wife. Visit him online at www.pilkey.com.
