This foam cup frog craft is so cute! I think I'll definitely be making this with the kids this weekend!

April in National Frog Month, and you’ve probably noticed I’ve posted a couple other frog crafts here lately. This one involves some painting, which kids absolutely love to do. I know it’s messy business, but if you lay out newspapers or a plastic dollar store tablecloth and have the kids wear a smock, clean up is a breeze.

I found some fun facts about frogs over at the Smithsonian website. For example, did you know that:

“when a frog swallows its prey, it blinks, which pushes its eyeballs down on top of the mouth to help push the food down its throat?”

This frog craft is perfect for our upcoming frog unit! Just need to get some foam cups!

This is a great time to teach the kids more about frogs. But parents, make sure you read the facts above first by yourself to determine which ones you feel are appropriate for your children.

There’s even more interesting information and fun facts at The American Museum of Natural History. Here’s something I didn’t know (I always thought toads and frogs were completely different!):

“Toads are frogs. The word “toad” is usually used for frogs that have warty and dry skin, as well as shorter hind legs.”

Supply list for this project:
Craft paint: green, black, white
Foam coffee cup
Green pom poms
Googly eyes
Green pipe cleaners
Red felt
Tools: Scissors, white craft glue, round sponge applicator, black marker

step one of making the foam cup frog craft

To make this fun frog project with your kids, start off by painting the cup with light green paint. Let it dry then repeat for a second coat.

2

Glue the googly eyes to the pom poms.

3

Cut the pipe cleaner into four equal pieces. Now cut those four pieces into thirds. You should have 12 small pieces.

4

Use round applicator to add green dots on the cup.

5

Use the handle end of the applicator to add white dots.

6

Push the pipe cleaner pieces into the cup for the frog’s toes.

7

Glue the eyes to the top of the cup. Cut a forked tongue from red felt scrap and glue to the front of the cup. Use black marker to add a smiley mouth and two dots for the nose.

Hope you have fun with it!
