These pretty coasters are made from recycled CDs or DVDs. We all have at least 2 or 3 of these lying around, so if you don’t have enough simply ask a friend. A pretty stencil and a little paint and these festive DVD coasters can be gracing your Thanksgiving table this year!
Stenciled DVD Coasters
I originally made these for Michaels craft stores and DecoArt using their Americana acrylic paints and a Tracy Moreau Americana Classic Stencil.
Turn old CDs and DVDs into a fun project that would make a lovely hostess gift!
Supplies you will need:
- 4 recycled CDs or DVDs
- Sandpaper
- E6000 Glue (on Amazon here, but cheaper at Michaels here)
- Felt, in colors that match your CD colors (maroon, orange, ivory, dark green)
- Scissors
- DuraClear Matte Varnish
- Classic Stencils Jacobean Floral by Americana
Americana acrylic paints
So many people loved my Recycled CD Coasters from last month that I thought it would be fun to make a fall inspired version. Only this time instead of fabric and Mod Podge I chose to use paint and a stencil.
You could do these in any color that you want, but my plates are a variety of fall colors, so I chose to do the same with my coasters.
Use whatever colors work for you.
It’s a pretty simple project really! Just sand, paint and stencil. Then glue some felt circles to the back and you are all set!
Get the full printable instructions below.
We also have fun Distressed Map Coasters – upcycle ugly old coasters into something cool! You can create these using a map of your hometown, or all the places you’ve visited if you want to get creative with it!
Or if you have a knack for crochet- these pizza coasters make a great gift for the holidays, or to use around the home to protect your furniture from water stains!
Another fun project is to make stenciled botanicals on canvas.

pat cody says
How or why do you send the cd?? And which side do you send
Thanks
Pat

Sanding the DVD will rough up the smooth surface, making it porous so the paint can grab. I sand the top side.

I have used mod podge and other clear coats as a sealer. But they do not work for a heated beverage as coffee or tea. The cup sticks. Can you recommend a sealer that is heat tolerant???
Thank You
Amanda Formaro says
Hi Vicki. You have me stumped actually. Mine have lasted for two years with the supplies listed in this post. Occasionally the cup does stick to the coaster, but it has not degraded the coaster at all.
Dominick says
hello i was wondering what side to you paint? the side you sand-pappered the shinnyness off or the other side of the cd?
Amanda says
Hi Dominick :) You paint the side that you sandpapered :)
Lorry says
Wouldn’t the sweat from the glasses mess up the mod podge? Or wouldn’t the water from the glass just slide off the coaster onto the table your trying to protect?
Amanda says
The sealer protects them and they seem to work just fine :)
Natasha says
Love these, so sweet
Gina says
Does the clear varnish protect them from water damage? I wasn’t sure what to seal my podged-coasters with. Thanks!
Amanda says
Hi Gina ;) The Mod Podge should actually be good enough. The varnish will protect them, but so does Mod Podge. If you click over to the other coasters I did with the fabric, you’ll see what I used there and I use those coasters all the time and they are still good as new!
