This post is sponsored by our friends at Paramount Pictures. Have you heard about the totally fun new family friendly film Sherlock Gnomes? Turns out there’s been a rash of garden gnome disappearances in London. So our cute cardboard tube gnomes, Gnomeo and Juliet, seek the help of legendary detective Sherlock Gnomes to solve the case of their missing friends and family. Don’t miss it in theaters on March 23!

Fun cardboard tube gnomes inspired by the characters of Sherlock Gnomes

Cardboard Tube Gnomes

Parents are going to love this film just as much as their kids do! You see there are some lessons to be learned here, like understanding the value of teamwork, not taking others for granted, and putting family first.

Cardboard Tube Gnomes - Gnomeo and Juliet

Sherlock Gnomes is in theaters on March 23, 2018. Watch the trailer below and then make plans to see it with your family.

We thought it would be fun to create a craft project around our main characters, Gnomeo and Juliet, as they try to save their garden gnome family. We’ve created some templates for you so it’s easy for kids to cut out the pieces they need from construction paper.

Sherlock Gnomes - cardboard tube gnomes

Adjusting this craft for younger kids

  • While our instructions show how to draw on our gnomes’ eyes and facial features, younger kids can glue on googly eyes or draw with a marker.
  • If you would like to introduce some textures into this craft, use yarn for the hair on both gnomes!
  • To make things easier or if you’re short on time, grown-ups can cut out the pieces ahead of time and let kids glue everything together.

cardboard tube gnomes step 1

Supplies you need:

  • Print these patterns
  • Acrylic craft paint in peach/flesh, light blue and white (we used Americana Flesh Tone, Soft Blue and Snow White)
  • 2 cardboard toilet paper rolls
  • Construction paper: blue, red, black and white
  • Yellow pipe cleaner
  • Markers: black, red, brown, light brown, gray, blue, green
  • White colored pencil
  • Paintbrush
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors

paint the cardboard tubes

make the hats

What you do:

  1. Paint the top third of the cardboard roll with flesh colored paint.
  2. For Gnomeo – paint the bottom two-thirds with light blue. For Juliet – paint the bottom two-thirds with white.
  3. While those are drying, use the pattern to cut out a blue and a red hat. Roll the half circle into a cone shape, securing with a glue stick.
  4. From the patterns cut a red skirt, white apron, black Juliet vest, blue Gnomeo vest, black belt and 2 each of the feet in black.

assemble juliet

To assemble Juliet:

  1. Use a red marker to draw a line around the border of the apron as shown in the photos and glue the apron to the red skirt.
  2. Glue the red skirt along the bottom of the tube.
  3. Draw the lace on her dirndl’s vest using a white colored pencil.
  4. Glue the vest above the red skirt and apron.

assemble gnomeo

To assemble Gnomeo:

  1. Glue the black belt to the blue vest.
  2. Glue the vest around the cardboard roll.
  3. Cut a 3-inch piece of yellow pipe cleaner and bend it into a rectangle for the belt buckle. Glue in place on the belt.

To finish them:

  1. Use a light brown marker to add hair to Gnomeo.
  2. Use brown marker to add hair to Juliet.
  3. Use a gray marker to add Gnomeo’s beard.
  4. Glue feet inside the front of each tube allowing some to hang out of the tube. Bend so you can stand the tube up.
  5. Add facial features with markers and paint. Alternatively, you can use googly eyes!

    Hi Amanda,
I love your Gnome Craft but I did not see the printables (shapes) that you mentioned that I could print out. Where can I find it to print out?

    Thanks
