Are you planning a Valentine’s Day party? Or maybe you would just like to make a fun decoration for Valentine’s Day for your mantle, hallway or the footboard of your child’s bed? Make this heart banner from duct tape and baker’s twine.

Duct Tape Heart Bunting

Buntings and banners are always great for decorating a party table or just for dressing up your child’s room. For this project, all you will need is some duct tape and string!

Supplies you need:

  • 2-3 colors duct tape (I used red, white and a heart pattern)
  • Baker’s twine or string
  • Sewing needle
  • Scissors
  • Craft knife
  • Cutting mat

Using a cutting mat is the easiest way to work with duct tape. If you don’t have a cutting map, you can use a plastic kitchen cutting board, but make sure you get your parent’s permission first!

Measure out a long strip of duct tape. Measure out a second strip and stick it to the first one, overlapping by about 1/4-inch to create a double wide strip.

duct tape bunting step 1

Measure out two more strips in the same fashion. Take your time with the next part. You will be creating a duct tape sheet by taping one set of double wide strips to the other, sticky side to sticky side.

Trim off the ends if any sticky pieces are showing.

Fold the tape sheet over onto itself by an inch or two, depending on how big you want your heart. Use scissors to cut half of a heart shape from the folded tape. Trim off the section where the heart was cut from and repeat for additional hearts.

duct tape bunting step 2

Cut as many hearts as you like, depending on how long you want your bunting to be.

Thread the needle with twine and connect the hearts by running the needle through the left side of a heart from the front, then back up through the right side of the heart from the back. Continue adding hearts until you have what you want. the hearts can easily be slid along the twine to adjust their placement.
