I wanted to make a festive Halloween door hanger from recycled materials. Last year I used wooden letters from the craft store to make this Eek Door Hanger, but this year I wanted a door hanger that would work for fall too, not just Halloween. Because I love to make luminaries, I tend to have a lot of canning lids laying around waiting to be turned into something. That’s when Jack O’ Lanterns popped into my head!

After all, canning lids are round. And usually pumpkins are round.

So it made perfect sense to me.

As always, a full printable supply list and instructions are at the end of this post.
For this project you will need the following supplies:

  • 3 large canning lids and bands
  • 3 medium canning lids and bands
  • Orange and yellow card stock
  • Patterned card stock
  • Decoupage medium (Mod Podge)
  • Nail and hammer or drill
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Hot glue gun
  • Long shoe lace

Use decoupage medium to attach card stock circles to the can lids, then facial pieces onto the circles.

Use contrasting papers to create facial pieces and attach those in the same fashion.

Poke a hole in each band using a hammer and nail. You will need to hammer from the inside of the band or you may bend the band. This will make the edges of the hole you create a bit sharp.

Squeeze and flatten those edges with pliers and push them through the hole so that the sharper edges are now on the inside of the band.

Line the inside of the band with hot glue and insert the pumpkin lid, be sure to line up the face with the band hole positioned at the top!

Run a shoelace through all the holes.

Tie into a knot at the top, leaving a loop to use as a hanger.

Hot glue the excess inside the top pumpkin lid. Hot glue the excess shoestring at the bottom inside the last lid.

It’s fun and festive and something the kids can help with too!

That’s such a great way to use jar lids. Hang it the other way and it would make a cute bunting for the fireplace.
