Make this mason jar bird feeder for your yard this summer. This quick and easy project will look great in your yard plus it makes a great gift as well!

Make this mason jar bird feeder in minutes for a fun summer garden craft.  Mix up a suet cake and stuff it in a jar with a dowel rod for a treat the birds will love.

Bird watching can be a fun hobby for kids and adults of all ages.  Giving them something to munch on in your yard makes spying your feathered friends even easier. 

Pick up some mason jar glasses and get started on a mason jar bird feeder today. You might want to pick up enough supplies to make a few, as these make great gifts as well. This is one of our favorite spring garden crafts!

Mason Jar Bird Feeder

Supplies needed to make a mason jar bird feeder:

  • Mason jar glass with handle
  • Dowel rod
  • 1 1/2 cups bird seed
  • 1/2 package unflavored gelatin
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup boiling water
  • Wire
How to make a Mason Jar Bird Feeder

How to make a mason jar bird feeder:

  1. Boil 1/4 cup of water.
  2. Add the water to a bowl and then stir in 1/2 a package of unflavored gelatin.  Mix well.
  3. Stir in corn syrup.
  4. Then stir in flour until everything is combined.
  5. Add this mixture to the bird seed.  Mix well.  I find it easiest just to use my hands for this portion.
  6. Stuff the mixture down inside your mason jar.  Add in your dowel rod and add mixture in around the rod.
  7. Continue until the mixture is in the jar then press down well.
  8. Cut off a long piece of wire and then wrap both ends around the handle of the mason jar.
  9. Hang your mason jar bird feeder anywhere in your yard where you want to attract the birds.

You might even want to make several of these.  The birds will love this homemade suet cake in a mason jar.  You also get the benefit of being able to watch them as they dine on this flavorful snack.  The kids will love it!

    What gauge wire did you use? Your link to the Amazon site was for 12 gauge wire, which even I cant bend, let alone wrap around the handle?
