When I made this mosaic flower pot, I had only ever done one other real mosaic project in my life. And that was years before. I made this flower pot a little over a year ago and I absolutely loved the experience as well as the end result.

The supplies I used

I already had the clay pot on hand, I think I bought it at Ace Hardware or Home Depot one day when I was going to repot one of my houseplants. That quickly turned into me wanting to add a mosaic design. Here are some of the things I used for this project (or you can see them all together here):

  • Clear square tiles and acrylic paint
  • Color crystal square tiles
  • Variety pack color tiles
  • Iridescent tiles
  • Mixed wooden buttons
  • Glass tile nippers
  • Mosaic glue
  • White powdered sanded grout
  • Round sponge
  • Mod Podge

Now, obviously I used several different types of tiles, and I have a lot of each leftover. I knew that going in, because I fully intend to do more mosaic projects!

Video of the Process

Below is a sped up video to give you a general idea of how it’s done. A few details I’ll point out are:

  1. I found it easiest to apply the mosaic glue to the back of the tiles with a small paintbrush, then position them on the pot using a large pair of tweezers.
  2. For the wooden buttons, I was concerned what the grout might do to them, so I gave those a coat of Mod Podge to protect them.
  3. I didn’t have enough of the crystal square tile colors I wanted to use, so I used acrylic paint to make my own! I used the clear square tiles and painted the back of those tiles. Once they were dry and I turned them over, you wouldn’t have guessed they didn’t come that way.
  4. I added painter’s tape to the bottom of the pot to keep from getting grout on it. I also taped a couple of grocery bags inside the pot for the same reason.
  5. I wore gloves and applied the grout with my hands so I could really feel what was happening.

I will say that I did not seal this for outdoor use because I’m using it inside. That’s another process. I really enjoyed making this and was so happy with the results!

I hope this project inspires you to make something new today!
