You too can make a no-knot fleece blanket using just a few supplies! If you love those easy tie blankets you see everywhere but don’t enjoy the knobby knots on them, I can show you another way to make a cozy fleece blanket!

Why we love this project

While I made this no knot fleece blanket for my dog, Buddy, you can of course make one as a homemade gift idea for just about any special occasion. Baby shower, Grandparents Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas, birthdays, you name it! And let’s not forget making one just for the fun of it.

It’s an easy method, and you won’t feel the bulky ties at the end when you accidentally roll over it or sit on top of it.

When my daughter was in high school, she came home with a simple knotted fleece blanket she had made with some friends. I wanted to make one for my dog, Buddy, for Christmas. However, I didn’t really want the knobby knots. So instead I’m going to show you another simple method for making these blankets, but without the knots!

How to make a no-knot fleece blanket

These step by step photos and instructions are here to help you visualize how to make this project. Please scroll down to simply print out the instructions!

Place solid fabric on the work surface then place patterned fleece directly on top, making sure all edges are lined up.

fabric on the work surface

If needed, trim any edges with scissors to ensure everything lines up neatly.

trim edges of fabric

Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure and cut a 4-inch square from each corner of the fleece, cutting through both the patterned and solid fabrics. Alternatively, you can use a 4-inch square piece of cardboard or paper as a template and cut around it.

Next cut 4-inch long by 1.5-inch wide strips along all four sides of the fleece, cutting through both fabrics.

cut strips

Take each strip and fold it up, placing them onto the top of the fabric.

Cut a small slit into each strip, again cutting through both pieces of fabric.

Cut a small slit into each strip

Insert the ends of the strip and gently pull through the slit. Be sure to pull the strips through snug (but be gentle as fleece stretches easily). This will make them lay flat, hence no knots!

If your doggy likes to unwrap presents like my Angel used to, then fold the blanket into thirds lengthwise and roll it up. Wrap the rolled blanket in wrapping paper and let your pup pull the paper off Christmas morning.

This blanket isn’t just for pups, of course. It makes a sweet homemade gift idea for family, friends, or neighbors as well! Who doesn’t love getting a cozy blanket as a gift?

Love the idea of no knots, but how well does it stay together when laundered???
