I love all the owl crafts that have been really popular over the last couple of years. I really like using decoupage because it truly opens up the doors for design possibilities. There are just so many things you can create with it!
While I certainly don’t have as much scrapbook paper as someone who actually scrapbooks, I have a pretty good stash building in my craft room! I have a weakness for all the pretty patterns available in the craft store. I love to buy the big books filled with all sorts of colors and patterns. I’m getting to the point where I need some real storage for it. So if you scrapbook and have a good system, I’d love to hear how you contain your stash in the comments!
My daughter loves owls, so when her birthday rolled around I knew this would be the perfect gift for her. I even wrote a personalized note on the back for my baby girl (who is now 20, but who’s counting?).
You can find these wooden owls at Michaels.
While I used Americana Decoupage Medium in matte finish, Mod Podge is also a fantastic product; either one works great. I also used Mustard Seed Americana paint and some scrapbook paper from my stash.

Note: some links below are affiliate links. That means if you happen to buy something, a small percentage of that sale goes back into this site, which enables me to continue to bring you free tutorials such as this one. So, thanks!
As always, a full printable supply list and instructions are at the end of this post.
For this project you will need the following supplies:
- Recollections Mosaic Memories paper or scrapbook paper of your choice
- Americana Decoupage – Matte
- Americana paint: Mustard Seed
- Wooden owl
- Sandpaper
- Pattern
Sand any rough edges on wood and dust off. Paint entire owl, front and back, with Mustard Seed.
If you like, you can certainly draw out your own design like I did. Or follow the instructions below using the pattern I have provided.
Using the pattern as a guide cut out the owl pieces from three different scrapbook paper designs. I used stripes for the body, a floral pattern for the head and wings, and a different floral pattern for the beak. Cut 2 large circles for the eyes from white paper, and 2 smaller circles from black or dark patterned scrapbook paper. Using the wooden owl as a guide trim the paper pieces so that there is about 1/8” of the wood visible when paper is in place.
Apply a thin coat of decoupage to the painted owl and let it dry completely. Paint a coat of decoupage on the back of the body piece and apply to the owl, pressing out the air from the center outward. Repeat this same process with the head and wing piece.
Before moving on to the next step, play around with the positioning of the eyes to decide where you want them to be.
Apply the beak then the whites of the eyes, and finally the pupils. Let everything dry for two hours before moving to the next step.
Use sandpaper to sand off some of the Mustard Seed paint on the edges of the owl. Run the sandpaper gently across the edges of the paper as well to give it an aged look. Brush off any sanding dust.
Apply an even coat of decoupage over the entire surface of the owl. Allow it to dry completely before displaying.
Once it’s dry it’s ready to display! Hope you enjoyed this project and it inspires you to do something crafty. :)

I went to Michael’s which is a hour away from me just to buy this owl. They had no such thing and the clerk says it is a seasonal thing. How long ago did you buy it and how can I find one? I have liked other projects and drive to Michael’s and I can not find items you use. Help me find these owls. Please
Amanda Formaro says
Sorry you had trouble finding them Judi. If you live an hour away from Michaels it might be better if you call first and ask if they have things. They are famous for carrying things seasonally. To be honest I don’t remember when I bought the owl. I often buy things I think would make a cute project and won’t use them until months later. If the owl isn’t available (I believe it was made by ArtMinds) you can always use this project as inspiration on another surface such as a paper mache box or small piece of canvas.

I went to MIchael’s but they don’t carry the owl anymore. When did you get it? have you seen any others around that could be used similarly?
Amanda Formaro says
Hi Becky. Sorry about that, I wasn’t aware that Michaels no longer had the owls. I don’t remember when I bought it, I often buy things I think would make a cute project and won’t use them until months later. Would love to make this, but our local Michaels does not have this owl. Any suggestions where else to get it?
Amanda Formaro says
Hi Linda. You’re the third person to tell me the owls aren’t available at Michaels any longer. So sorry about that! I would suggest using the patterns to create another project, maybe a paper mache box or canvas as I mentioned to the other ladies, or if you like to applique, you could use the pattern to make a shirt or dish towels using fabric instead of scrapbook paper. :)
