Do your kids love to craft with paper plates? If so, they will definitely want to learn how to make a paper plate dalmatian. This easy and fun kid’s craft requires basic craft supplies and is not at all time consuming, making it perfect for home, school, or daycare.
How to Make a Paper Plate Dalmatian
Paper plates are an open-ended craft supply that kids can’t resist…especially if there are scissors involved. When we were making our paper plate dalmatian, we pulled up several adorable pictures of dalmatian puppies on the internet. My kids were “oohing” and “ahhing” like crazy!
We made our dalmatian’s spots with crayons, but you could also give kids the option of using paint, markers, or black paper. We colored a nose on our dalmatian with crayons, but kids could get creative with pom poms or buttons.
To Make This Craft You Will Need
- 1 white paper plate
- scissors
- 1 black and 1 red crayon
- tacky craft glue
- 1 medium-sized wiggly eye
- pencil
- black pen
Directions
After gathering supplies, invite kids to cut their paper plate in half. On one of the halves, draw an arched shape with a pencil, then invite kids to cut along the line.
Kids can use the other half of the paper plate to cut a small half circle shape (the dog’s head), a tail, 1 ear, and 1 tongue for their dog.
Invite kids to color their dog’s tongue red. Kids can use the black crayons to color spots on their dalmatian’s body, head, and ears. Almost all of the dalmatian pictures we looked at online showed that dalmatians did not have spots on their tails.
Of course, it would be extra fun for kids to be creative and choose their own colors. The thought of a pink spotted dalmatian makes me smile!
When kids are finished coloring, invite them to glue their wiggly eye onto the dog’s face. They can also glue the dog’s tongue and ear into the appropriate positions on the dog’s head. Next, they can glue the head and tail to the body.
As a finishing touch, invite kids to use a black pen to draw “paws” at the end of the large paper plate arch.
Now your child’s paper plate dalmatian is complete!
You can play with the shape of the body and make it however you’d like! There is room for mistakes here. You may want to cut the body to be thicker at first and adjust the body as you see fit.
Wouldn’t it be fun to deliver paper plate dalmatians to a local fire station, complete with a thank you note and a plate of cookies? What a fun way to teach kids about community helpers and gratitude!
