If you hit the canvas section of the craft store, you will find not only large and medium canvas in many sizes, you’ll even find little ones. They are ideal for small spaces or rooms like the kitchen or bathroom that don’t have a ton of wall space.
I used Craft Smart paint for this project. You will find it at Michaels with the other craft paints. The colors I used were Light Pink, Light Yellow, Light Green, Robin’s Egg Blue, White and their Matte Varnish for the final step.
I grabbed a package of 4-mini canvases, the 2″x4″ size.
Draw your designs on the canvases uses a hot glue gun.
Remove all the glue strings, using a toothpick or small pair of scissors for harder to reach areas.
Paint each canvas a different color, going completely over the glue design. Use a dry brush technique to add some White to the canvases, paying close attention to the raised glue designs. When everything has dried, apply a coat of matte varnish.
I originally made this project for Michaels Craft Store via DecoArt.

When the kids want to craft with, I let when stick rope onto the pattern using craft glue and then cover the canvas with paint and highlight the pattern with white by dry brushing.

I think the hot glue strings would send me over the edge…I’m going with Aleene’s!
Amanda Formaro says
Hi marg. What type of Aleene’s glue were you thinking of? Regular white craft glue won’t hold it’s shape and will dry flat, hence no 3D affect. You could also use puffy paint instead of hot glue.
marg blickenderfer says
ooo! puffy paint! Great idea! Thank you!

You are quite welcome!

Was just thinking about trying this. I saw some 12 x 12’s done like this in a group of three at a dr’s office recently. They did all botanical designs, then painted over all in a metallic silver ! Loved it!

What a fun idea!

Hope you have fun! Fair warning, the glue strings tried to drive me mad :) so be patient in getting rid of them all!
