It’s no secret that I make lots of cardboard tube crafts. There’s something about cardboard tubes that just immediately gets my creative wheels turning. I’ve made so many over the years that I’ve lost count!
A little weird, I know. But it’s not uncommon for me to change the toilet paper roll and imagine what I could do with that empty tube!
With Halloween coming, I wanted to make something colorful and super fun, which is where these ghouls came into play. I made some cardboard tube monsters for Parents Magazine a few years ago, but I wanted to do something even simpler.
These colorful ghouls are easy enough for younger kids to make, no painting needed. Depending on how much you embellish them, a grown up may need to help with cutting, but for the most part kids should be able to easily make these themselves.

As always, a full printable supply list and instructions are at the end of this post.
For this project you will need the following supplies:
- 2 cardboard paper towel tubes
- Construction paper: orange, yellow, green, red and purple
- Googly eyes (various sizes)
- White paper
- Black marker
- Yarn
- Crinkle cut shredded paper
- Tools: glue stick, scissors, white craft glue
NOTE: The only place I’ve ever seen these monster googly eyes is at Michaels. Online I was able to find them at Oriental Trading. If you’ve seen them anywhere else, please let me know!
Cut one cardboard tube into two pieces, one a little longer than the other. Cut the other cardboard tube into three pieces, varying lengths.
Cover the cardboard tubes with construction paper using a glue stick.
Add goggly eyes using white craft glue. Use marker to add eyebrows.
Draw mouths on white paper using a black marker.
Cut out and glue to the tubes.
Cut yarn into 3-inch lengths and glue inside the top of a cardboard tube for hair. You can also use crinkle cut colored paper (often comes as packaging material in shipping boxes) as hair.Construction paper can also be cut into strips or long triangles and glued on as hair.
I hope you enjoy this project and that your kids have lots of fun making them!
