Add a little romance to your home with an inexpensive and pretty fabric heart wreath. This wreath is made from leftover fabric and is the perfect touch for Valentine’s Day!
Heart Wreath for Valentine’s Day
Although I’m not one to go all out for Valentine’s Day, it is always fun to add some color and new decorations to my home in the middle of winter!
Last year I also made an upcycled heart garland with scrap fabric I had at home. I loved how the hearts turned out so much. So this year I made a few more and created this pretty heart wreath with them. Other than the wreath hoop, I had everything at home – my wallet and husband always sigh when I shop my craft room for supplies!
A few touches of pink and hearts here and there are the perfect way to celebrate the season of love! I like to put out my pink painted pine cone roses and give my daughter some sweet treats in these pretty painted clay pots.
Materials Needed to Make a Fabric Heart Wreath:
- MDF Hoop, size 16” diameter
- Americana Acrylics paint in Poodleskirt Pink
- Paintbrush, 1″
- Printable Heart Templates in two sizes: small (4.5” high) and large (6.5” high)
- Denim fabric, approx. ¼ yard (enough to make 9 large and 9 small hearts)
- Pink Printed fabric, approx. ⅛ yard
- Fusible interfacing (only if fabric is thin and needs backing)
- Sewing Machine and matching thread
- Sewing needle and matching thread
- Fabric Scissors
- Polyester Batting
- 3 wood buttons
- Hot glue gun and clear glue sticks
- Twine
How to Make a Pretty Heart Wreath:
Paint the surface of the MDF hoop in pink. Set aside to dry.
Sewing the Large Hearts
Cut out the fabric scraps into heart shapes using the large hearts template provided. For added interest, I cut one side in denim fabric and the other side in a colored silk. You could however stick with the same fabric for both sides.
Since the silk was light and flimsy compared with the denim, I added a lightweight fusing to the backside to help stiffen the silk and make it easier to sew with.
With the RIGHT sides of fabric together, sew the heart closed with a ¼” seam allowance from the edge. Continue all the way around leaving a 2” gap opening.
Trim the seam allowance along the curves and clip at center of the sewn heart to help maintain heart shape when turned right side out.
Turn the stitched heart right side out. You can insert a pencil into the heart to smooth out the edges.
Lightly fill the heart with polyester batting.
Stitch the 2” opening closed by hand with a needle and matching thread color.
Repeat to make 9 hearts.
Sewing the Small Hearts
Cut out the fabric scraps into heart shapes using the small heart template provided.
With the WRONG sides of fabric together, sew the heart closed with a ¼” seam allowance from the edge. Continue all the way around leaving a 1.5” gap opening.
Lightly fill the heart with polyester batting.
Sew the opening closed with the sewing machine.
Repeat to make 9 hearts.
Assembling the Wreath
Start by laying out the large hearts on the wreath hoop until you are happy with the arrangement.
Next, glue each of the large hearts to the hoop with hot glue.
Then, lay out the small hearts over top of the large ones until you are happy with the arrangement. In addition to being decorative, the small hearts help to stabilize the larger ones on the ring.
Glue each of the small hearts onto the larger ones.
For added interest, add three wooden buttons onto the wreath.
Finally, tie some twine to the top of the wreath for hanging.
That’s it! You have a beautiful new fabric heart wreath to “lovingly” display for Valentine’s Day and after.

My granddaughter is visiting and bored so this am, we made the rabbit family. After dad was finished she started crying. Said they were wrong. She thought they were mini baskets. So we cut and glued a bottom and added a pipe cleaner for handle. Smiles.
