Peppermint bath salts are easy to make and a cute gift idea for anyone on your holiday gift-giving list. Dye half in red and layer them in a jar for a candy cane theme everyone will love.

Peppermint Bath Salts

Why we love this project

The bath salts themselves have just four ingredients and you may even have the supplies you need on hand.  Mixing them together and adding them to the jar takes no more than 10 minutes.  That makes this one easy, quick, and even inexpensive gift idea.

Whip up a few batches of these peppermint bath salts and some Lavender Sugar Scrubs to keep on hand for unexpected guests bearing gifts.  They will love the sweet peppermint scent when they use these fragrant bath salts.

You can find the full printable instructions and materials list at the end of this post.

How to make peppermint bath salts

NOTE: We have never had an issue with regular food coloring staining with this recipe, however, you CAN purchase bath specific coloring here if you prefer!

  1. In a small bowl, mix 1 cup Epsom salt and 1 tablespoon baking soda.
  2. Add 4 drops peppermint essential oil and mix well.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix an additional 1 cup Epsom salt, 1 tablespoon baking soda, and 4 drops of peppermint essential oil.
  4. In one of your bowls, add 9 drops of red food coloring and mix well.
  5. Tilt the jar to the side and start adding the peppermint bath salts to the jar.
  6. Add the red and white salts alternately to the jar by spooning in.
  7. Press down occasionally with your spoon.
  8. Continue until all of your bath salts are in the jar.
  9. Add your lid and tie on a gift tag with a ribbon.

TIP: If you love these bath salts but prefer to buy them instead of making them head over to Etsy to see their collection.

Use about 1/3 cup of bath salts to your warm bath water and about 4-6 tsp of baking soda

It was hard to get the color mixed into the powders. And it would be nice if she posted an amount to add to the water in her final comments.

Hubby and I made a few jars up the other night and had a blast making the stripes in the jars!! What a fun and easy way to give friends and family some self care this holiday season :) think I’ll even stash one away for us to use after our hectic month of making and baking. I loved make these and was planning on giving them as gifts at Christmas but one week after making them all the colour had bleed between the layers and completely coloured each section. Any ideas what I did wrong or how to stop this next time?

I just made 5 jars for friends of the peppermint bath salts. Looks so pretty but concerned how they’ll feel having bath water light red to bathe in. How much would you recommend to add to a tub full of water and have you had anyone say it was strange getting into red water? Please reply. Thanks

For a full bath, 1 cup of salts will be good. The volume of water compared to the amount of red food coloring will be barely, if at all, noticeable.

People use food dye to make things like bath bombs and salts all the time. The diluted product with all the bath water will prevent it from staining anyone’s skin

And with the rush of Christmas for all of us who MAKE the holidays what they are, it’s a great gift to make for yourself. One year I tinted 6 different colors and added appropriate scents, ie., pink rose, purple violet and made rainbow stripes in tall skinny jars. Granddaughter got an Eiffel Tower bottle I found on sale! I LOVE making “Be Good to Yourself” baskets for gifts, raffles, and the church bazaar using a mix of homemades and storebots!

I agree, Kathy! It’s also a wonderful gift to yourself after all the stresses the holidays can sometimes bring. Handmade gifts are always the best!
