Set the mood for love this Valentine’s Day with a pretty DIY heart garland. Not only is it a fun way to celebrate romance, but it’s a great way to add a pop of color to these cold days of winter.
DIY Heart Garland
Hello friends! This is Sonja from Sustain My Craft Habit, a DIY, craft and home decor blog that I write with my sister Jane. Not only is this craft idea so versatile, but we were able to make it using materials we already had at home. We used leftover scrap fabric from other sewing projects (check out our checkered denim picnic blanket) to make these pretty decorative hearts. You could also use worn out clothing for a fun and eco-friendly upcycling idea.
This heart garland is made with a sewing machine so some sewing experience is needed. By selecting fabrics that are more neutral in color and texture, you could use the heart garland for multiple occasions: Valentine’s Day, bridal showers, baby showers or even as pretty year-round decor.
Supplies Needed for this Heart Garland:
- Fabric scraps of your choosing (we used denim fabric scraps and a thrift-store floral printed silk scarf)
- Heart Template – 6.5” high x 6.5” wide
- Scissors
- Iron-on fusible interfacing (optional)
- Cotton batting or fiberfill stuffing
- Sewing Machine; thread; hand sewing needle; pins; measuring tape
- Ribbon, ½” wide
- Twine
How to Make a DIY Heart Garland:
Begin by cutting out your fabric scraps into heart shapes (template provided). We cut one side in denim and the other side in silk.
Since the silk is light and flimsy compared with the denim, we added a lightweight fusing to the back side to help stiffen the silk and make it easier to sew with.
Next, cut the ribbon to 12” long and fold in half. Pin to center with the loop end towards the inside of the heart.
With right sides together, pin the hearts together and with 1/4″ seam allowance, stitch the heart closed leaving a 1.5” opening.
Trim away the excess seam allowance and clip into the center point of the heart (take care not to cut the stitches).
Once trimmed, turn the stitched heart right side out. You can insert a pencil into the heart to smooth out the edges.
Lightly fill the heart with batting and stitch the opening closed with a needle and matching thread.
Repeat these steps to make more hearts. Finally, string them on a piece of twine and hang to enjoy!
