Why we love this project
These cuties are easy to make and are fun to place on bookshelves or outdoors. Kids and adults alike will love creating their own sheep rocks.
Sheep crafts are fun to make as are painted rocks. We’ve made recycled CD lambs and even made cardboard tube lambs so combining our love for painted rocks and sheep crafts, we knew these would be one adorable project!

How to Make Sheep Painted Rocks
These step by step photos and instructions are here to help you visualize how to make this project. Please scroll down to simply print out the instructions!
- Make sure all your rocks are clean and dry.
- Give the rock a washed-out look using a watered down black and white paint mixture.
- Mix a small amount of water with a bit of black paint and paint the surface of the rock.
- Right after, use a clean paper towel and wipe away the excess paint leaving a washed-out appearance.
- Do the same on the other rock or rocks with a watered down white paint mixture. Let paint dry fully before moving onto the next step.
- Using a white paint pen, gently begin drawing spirals all over the black-washed rocks. Avoid pressing on to the paint pen too much, keeping the strokes light and consistent.
- Do the same on the white-washed rocks using a black paint pen.
- On the white sheep, use a fine tip paintbrush to paint a round egg shape on the upper half of the rock in black paint. This is to resemble the sheep’s face. Next, paint the ears as well as the sheep hooves as shown.
- On the black sheep, do the same except use a beige paint instead.
- Using a white paint pen, draw two oval-shaped eyes on the face. Once dry, paint the pupils using a black paint pen.
- Draw the nose and mouth on the black painted sheep as shown. Repeat for making more painted sheep rocks.
Expert Crafting Tips
- If you will be placing your rocks outside I recommend a brand of paint called Patio Paint. Or you can use regular acrylic paint and paint them with a coat or two of outdoor sealer.
- Kids can use foam applicators instead of paintbrushes.
- Keep costs down by hunting for smooth rocks out in your yard or at the park.
These sheep painted rocks are great as an Easter activity or for painting your favorite farm animal. This project works for adults and is easy enough for kids, though younger children may need some help. We hope you enjoy this fun painted rock idea!
