I’ll admit that I was never really into comics, but the rise in comic book crafts has peaked my interest in the last couple of years. I like to go to the local flea market and noticed that a lot of vendors have comic books for sale. Some are collectible and others are not, but just the same there are a lot more than I ever remember seeing before.
Maybe that’s because my senses weren’t in tune to them previously? Kind of like when you get a new car, and suddenly everywhere you go you see the same car over and over again. They were always there, you’re just more in tune with them now, so they jump out at you. Maybe that’s what happened with me and comic books.
Whatever the case may be, even though I’m not a true comic book enthusiast, I do love to craft with them. They are marvelous for decoupaging and these little trinket boxes would make a great gift for the comic book fan on your list. Great for Father’s Day too!
And did you know there is a movie in production called Batman vs. Superman?? I had no idea until today when I was doing a little searching. Fun, because I have a few other Batman and Superman crafts that I’ll be posting in the coming weeks!
Note: some links below are affiliate links. That means if you happen to buy something, a small percentage of that sale goes back into this site, which enables me to continue to bring you free tutorials such as this one. So, thanks!
As always, a full printable supply list and instructions are at the end of this post.
For this project you will need the following supplies:
- Paper mache round boxes with lids
- Black paint
- Batman and Superman comic books (I got mine from the flea market for 50 cents each)
- Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
- Paintbrush
- Scissors
- Pen or pencil
Paint the boxes black and set aside to dry.
Cut out sections of comic books that you want to use.
Use the lid from your container to trace around the comic book page you want to be on the lid. Cut it out, but cut it about 1/4-inch smaller than your tracing lines.
Apply a thin layer of decoupage to the back of the comics and let dry for five minutes.
When placing the comics onto the painted boxes, apply some Mod Podge to the center of the comics and press out any air bubbles. Work your way outward from the center, adding more Mod Podge to attach the rest of the comic.
Allow the comics to dry on the surface for about 20 minutes.
Cover the entire surface of the box with a generous, but not dripping, amount of Mod Podge. Let dry completely (overnight is best) before placing the lid on the container.
I have these boxes sitting in my craft room right now. Several people have seen them and each one has said that they were cool, and they weren’t even comic book fans!
So if you have a Batman or Superman enthusiast on your gift list, grab some comic books and get decoupaging!
