Monogram project ideas have been popular for quite a few years now. I’ve seen them nestled in the center of a wreath, hung on a door, embellished with twigs, turned into diy wall letters covered in flowers; I’ve even decoupaged them with tie dye! Now I know no one wants to hear this in the middle of July, but “back to school” season is coming quickly. This corkboard wall letter is perfect for a teen’s bedroom or a dorm room. It’s an easy corkboard craft that’s inexpensive and takes less than 30 minutes to make!
How to Make a Corkboard Wall Letter
Cork tiles make super handy bulletin boards, great for keeping anyone organized. They are used as mail organizers, a place to hold recipes, a spot for children’s artwork, and they are perfect for above a desk in an office, bedroom or dorm room. While most monogram projects or wall letters are displayed on a shelf or hung on a wall as decoration, this corkboard wall letter is useful and practical.
While younger kids will love my duct tape monster corkboard for their homework station, your teens will appreciate something more sophisticated and chic. It’s a great way to personalize their space and the project itself only takes about 20 minutes to complete! Either way, this can be considered an easy craft for kids and a function adult craft as well.
This project uses a craft knife, which is sharp. We recommend parental supervision when working with younger children. Using a cutting mat is also recommended to protect surfaces from cut marks.
Supplies for the Corkboard Wall Letter:
- 12×12 cork tile
- Command strips (if not included with tile)
- Cutting mat or board
- Craft knife or box cutter
- Scissors
- Thumbtacks
You can find free letter templates on the Internet by simply searching “letter A template” (change A to the letter you wish to find). You can also use a program such as Word to type a letter in the font you like, or draw one freehand. I do recommend sticking with fonts that have straight lines rather than curvy scripts to keep the shaping simple.
Print out your letter large enough to take up the entire sheet of paper.
For my letter, I actually wanted it to be a bit bigger, so when I cut the letter out, I left an excess border of about 1/2-inch all the way around it.
Place cork tile on top of the cutting mat. Hold the letter in place on top of the cork (you can add thumbtacks to hold it in place) and use the craft knife to cut through the cork in the shape of the letter.
Once you’ve finished cutting out the letter, trim any jagged or lumpy edges with your craft knife.
Cork tiles usually comes with self adhesive wall mounts. Attach a few to the back and hang it on the wall. If yours didn’t come with them, I recommend using Command Strips. They hang anything!
That’s it! Super easy right? You can do just a letter like I have, or maybe a short word like OMG or LOL would be really cute hanging above a desk. Looking for more inspiration? I have a bunch of wall art ideas here!
