The 4th of July is right around the corner and we love to celebrate it with a little crafting! Here’s a fun project all the kids will love. Our Patriotic Slime will keep them entertained at the cookout and it’s super easy!

Why this slime is so fun

This Borax-free slime is made using clear school glue, food coloring, and lots of glitter and sequins, just like our Mermaid Slime! With the help of baking soda and saline solution from the medicine shelf, you will bring it to life in minutes.

The only thing that might be more fun than making this patriotic slime recipe is watching a fireworks show.

Craft Supplies You’ll Need

If you don’t have star sequins, mix in regular red, silver, or blue colored sequins or even rhinestones. We found our star sequins at Michaels craft store. For both glitter and food coloring, start with a little bit and add more as you desired until you get your desired sparkle and intensity.

These step by step photos and instructions are here to help you visualize how to make this project. Please scroll down to simply print out the instructions!

  1. Empty the entire 4 oz bottle of clear glue into a plastic bowl.

  1. Squirt in one tablespoon of saline solution.
adding saline solution to bowl
  1. Stir for a minute or so until baking soda is dissolved and mixture starts to pull away from sides of the bowl.  At some point, you will need to knead with your hands. If slime is still sticky, squirt in a little more saline solution until it becomes easier to pull.

  1. Pour in your desired amount of iridescent fine glitter. We used about 2 tablespoons for this batch.

Expert Tips & FAQs

  • When crafting with a large group, purchase value packs or a gallon of glue to keep costs down.
  • With large groups of kids, have things pre-measured so you avoid excess use of supplies; this makes it easier to make sure everyone gets their proper share.
  • It’s best to use bowls and mixing supplies that you will throw away or save just for slime projects.
  • We mixed in iridescent fine glitter and multi-color star sequins, but try adding in foam balls too for a cool, sensory feel (see our floam tutorial to see what we mean!).

If you are making this slime for party favors, you can put the slime in clear jars like we did with our Pumpkin Slime and Black Glitter Slime. You could even have a slime-making station where the kids can decorate their jar with patriotic stickers, rhinestones, washi tape, and more.  Make it an over-the-top 4th of July craft celebration!

Why did my slime turn purple?

Elementary my dear! Red and blue make purple, so after playing with and manipulating the slime for a while, the colors will muddy together and eventually turn purple.
